Winding through these areas is one of the most charming and picturesque oceanside drives along Victoria Road, which culminates in Chapmans Peak and is essential Sunday driving on a sunny day.     

This truly is an outdoor lover’s paradise with the mountain paths of Signal Hill, Lions Head and Table Mountain National Park on one side and numerous beach and ocean activities on the other.

The Sea Point promenade, with its meandering paths along the shoreline from Granger Bay to Queens Road is a firm favourite with most residents out running, cycling, and walking before sunset over the sea, while the glistening sand beach of Camps Bay is a summer haven, and a perfect place to catch a tan and take a refreshing dip in the ocean.

For restaurant lovers, the wealth of seaside eateries, cafes and fine dining establishments offer gastronomic delight to compliment the exquisite views, with sundowners over the sea adding a touch of holiday ambiance to the setting.

History of the Atlantic Seaboard

The Atlantic seaboard has always been a popular summer holiday destination with permanent residents and development increasing in recent years as property buyers have capitalised on the vast investment potential and unique locations.

Clifton was named after a hotelier, Bessie Clifton, who ran the first hotel in the area and while the area was a popular summer holiday destination, there was mostly camping available before wooden beach houses were eventually constructed.

In 1984 the seaside areas of Clifton, Glen Beach and Bakoven where declared National Monuments to stop massive apartment block developments from spreading beyond First Beach.

Attractions

Green Point Park

This newly developed urban park allows families the space to picnic and unwind in the shelter of Signal hill. A natural spring from Table Mountain feeds the stream running through it and there are several water features including a lake. Two play parks for children and ample shaded areas with tables mean it is a sought-after destination for picnics and kids birthdays. Bring your blanket and hang out on the lawns for a perfect family outing in the city.

Sea Point Promenade

The promenade as it is known is a popular before and after work destination for runners, cyclists and strollers. The paved pedestrian walkway along the Mouille point and Sea point beachfront offers unrivalled sea views and salt laden sea air, revitalising the senses and encouraging a healthy outdoors lifestyle for residents. A fitness park, playgrounds and proximity to restaurants add to the allure and it is bustling on any given day.

Sea Point Pavilion Swimming Pool

This landmark public swimming pool in Sea Point is a great place to do some laps and is situated right next to the sea, which it uses to fill the Olympic size pools. Other features include diving boards, lifeguards and a children’s pool for the little ones to splash in. 

Atlantic Beaches

For beach lovers, the Atlantic seaboard offers it all from Blue Flag beaches to hidden gems and each curve of the coastline is lined with idyllic sunbathing and leisure spots. The most popular and famous beaches for sun worshipping include the wind sheltered Clifton 1^st to 4^th beaches and Camps Bay, where the glistening sands beckon sun-kissed bodies to spend the summer. Llandudno provides exceptional and powerful waves for surfing and remains pristine with crystal-clear, azure blue waters when the summer winds blow.    

Theatre on the Bay

For the arts and culture lovers, Pieter Torien’s Theatre on the Bay is the perfect place for an intimate show. Expect a mix of local and international acts with genres ranging from drama to dance and everything in between. This venue also offers dinner before and after shows as well as drinks in the main foyer and is the perfect place for an evening out.

Paragliding Off Lions Head

Get the adrenalin pumping as you take a short sprint off Lions Head and into the air over the Atlantic. Tandem paragliding is a popular pastime on this peak and operators offer daily trips when the winds are right. Expect a bird’s eye view of the mountains and beaches as you glide along the thermals around Lions Head before landing on the sunset strip for lunch or sundowners.

Oudekraal Nature Reserve

Oudekraal is a great spot for a swim and a weekend braai with a view. Sheltered from the wind and the waves it offers safe swimming for children, although chilly and plenty of braai facilities in different elevated areas overlooking the sea.
